The Sint Nicolaaskerk is one of the better known new churches of Amsterdam. The Church is tall and spacious and has a remarkable architectural style. The Church has a prominent location opposite the Central Station. Whoever arrives in Amsterdam can not escape the impressive silhouette of the Sint Nicolaaskerk.

rnrnDuring the Alteration (the overtaking of the catholic city council by a reformed one) in 1578, the Catholics lost their Sint Nicolaaskerk, the present-day Oude Kerk. In the 17th century they were forced to gather in shelter or home-churches like the Ons' Lieve Heer op Solder also called the second Sint Nicolaaskerk. Not until the second half of the 19th century Catholics dared to manifest themselves. The Sint Nicolaaskerk on the Prins Hendrikkade is an example of this. On the 7th of February 1887 the Church was consecrated and on the 30th of March the Holy Sacrament was taken from the shelter church to the new church in a solemn procession.rn

rnThe name Sint Nicolaas derives from the holy Sint Nicolaas, among others patron saint of sailors.

rnrnThe Sint Nicolaaskerk has a very beautiful, well-kept interior and still has catholic services. In 1999 a costly restoration of the interior and exterior was completed.rn
