PRAMBANAN  Temple

This Hindu temple was built by Sanjaya dynasty, started in the year 832 AD and finished 24 years later in 856 AD. Now, it is situated 15 kms east of Yogyakarta, exactly in the border between Yogyakarta  Special  Region  Province and Central  Java  Province. As one of the major place of interest in Jogja, this temple is managed by government’s private company together with Borobudur dan Ratu Boko temples. But do not expect too much about ideal facilities for visitors.

There are 6 main temples in the inner courtyard. The biggest 3 of them are dedicated to 3 main gods in Hindu: Shiva, Brahma and Vishnu. Face-to-face to each big temple, there are 3 smaller temples housing animal statues as representation of: swan The Hamsa, bull the Nandi and the sunbird Garuda. There are two small building in north and south part that are interpreted that they were formerly functioned as storerooms or kiosks. The inner courtyard is surrounded by 224 minor temples which now lie in ruins.

The complex of Prambanan temple has an open-air stage for Ramayana dance performance. It has a daily show usually started around 8 PM, the visitors are mostly foreigners. And, there is a special performance every full moon night. The stage is nicely set with the view to Prambanan temple in the background.

BOROBUDUR  Temple

Borobudur is one of the most famous Buddhist temple in the world. Lying in the fertile Kedu (Magelang) plain, it is situated 40 kms north of Jogja. There are 3 volcanoes surround this great temple, while on the fourth side there is a limestone cliffs. Borobudur might be the largest monument in the southern hemisphere with it’s coverage area of 200 square metres and 34.5 meters tall. The great thing is that Borobudur has been appointed as one of the World Heritage by UNESCO.

This temple was constructed around 850-750 AD by Syailendra dynasty of The Kingdom of Sriwijaya. Almost the whole temple was buried due to Merapi volcano eruption in 1815. Fortunately, the Dutch colonial rediscovered the temple around early 1900’s. The government of Republich of Indonesia took over the effort with renovation, until Borobudur might be able to be opened for public in 1975. Borobudur is architecturally interesting, as well as its important part in history and archaeology.

The form of Borobudur looks like a massive pyramid with five rectangular levels, three circular levels and the summit is formed by a big stupa. Each level represents a period of human life, and to follow the story on engraved stonewall visitors has to walk clockwise starting from the stairs in east side. There are dozens of Buddha sculptures inside stupas in the summit, as much as Buddha sculptures without stupa all over the temple.

For this trip, Fotografer.net has asked special recommendation from Ministry of Education which is in charge of archaeology conservation, and from Ministry of Culture of Culture and Tourism which is in charge of taking care of promotion of tourism places of interest. This recommendation and permission is needed to allow us to enter the temple before public visiting hour ( 6 AM) and shoot the sunrise with unordinary setting. Historically, Kotagede was the capital of Mataram empire founded by Panembahan Senopati in 1575. It lasted for 39 years until Sultan Agung, Panembahan Senopati’s son, founded the early Kingdom of Yogyakarta. During colonial era, Dutch government brought some Madurese entrepeneurs to Kotagede. They were assigned to run silvercraft business combined with the taste of Yogyakarta’s artists. PUNDONG – The Bamboo  Bridge and Traditional Market

Pundong is the name of a district in Bantul region. It is situated about 15 kms south of Jogja on the way to Parangtritis beach. The bamboo bridge location is about 2 kms from the main road, through the villages and rice fields. This kind of traditional bridge is very rare now since modernization is rapidly grown in Jogja.

The story behind this bridge is unique and interesting as it is not constructed by the government. A small river divides the village of Pundong, and locals who lives in the far part need to move everyday to the part near main road where the schools and main market of the district is located. The government has not paid any attention to this need and the locals decided to build a bridge on their own cost. Some people who are originally from Pundong and live in big cities, and some others who have sympathy, help the locals with donations since it needs a relatively big amount of money while majority of the locals is poor.

In rainy season the surface of the river becomes higher and sweep away the bridge. It happens every year and everytime it happens small bamboo boats will replace to function of the bridge to transport the locals. It means, as soon as the rainy season comes to its end the locals will start to collect funds to built a new bridge. When the surface of water is low enough to construct, people in Pundong and surrounding area will stop their daily activity and work together to build the bridge. It will be approximately 30 meters long and about 5 meters tall from the river bottom.

The traditional market is located halfway between the main road and bamboo bridge. You may find interesting photo objects that might not be found outside Jogja. There are vegetable sellers, livestocks, daily foods, tobaccos and cigarettes, farming tools, and many more. Make sure to stay low profile, keep smiling, and don’t attract attention from the locals. Trying to communicate with them might help you to get better pictures and hear their stories, but ironically it is very possible to happen other way, negative responses.

If we drew a straight line, to the north this road will reach Merapi volcano and to the south it will reach Parangkusumo beach with Keraton in the middle of it. The story says that this was designed to spiritually (in Javanese culture and Javanese animism) connects Merapi, Keraton and southern beach.

Malioboro was designed as a ceremonial boulevard, but today it becomes the heart of business and tourism downtown Yogyakarta. You may find street vendors selling various type handicrafts. TAMAN  SARI  Water  Castle and NGASEM Bird Market

The big complex of Taman Sari ( Water  Castle) was built on 18 th century. It was designed as amusement park for the royal family, especially for sultan to escape from his daily activities. It was luxurious and convenient, with series of swimming pools and fountains as well as underground mosque, a large boating lake and a few small groves of coconut and cloves. A tower was built for sultan to watch his wives and harem splashing in the pools below. After made selection of the bathers, he would then retire to the tower’s bedroom.

What we will see is the ruins of Taman Sari. British invasion in 1812 damaged many parts of Taman Sari. It went worse after earthquake in 1867. Today, Taman Sari is being renovated and reconstructed by the funds of a cultural foundation from United States and a cultural foundation from Portugal. It is definitely not an easy job to do considering the damages and realizing that some people has lived and built their houses among the ruins for years.

Within the former grounds of Taman Sari lies Ngasem bird market on an area approximately of half acre. It was a boating lake, but today the market is busy with pet tradings. To have birds is a must for grown-up male in Javanese culture. Some species of birds may have price as high as a hundred million Rupiah.
